I think it's nice to allow someone to hold a trophy during their reign where possible. I currently have 3 trophies in my possession which end up stored away in a cupboard - which seems a little bit of a waste in a way.

I agree that it does lead to some concerns/issues though.

I did recently create a document (attached) to use when I'm letting someone take a trophy away - the first page for me to collect their CURRENT contact details and the second page that they can take away with them which asks them to engrave the trophy and also makes sure they have my contact details...
