Thanks for the comments on the late surge. One important feature of
Trigantius is that we have an entry limit of 80, and this may well
indicate a solution.

Lesson II Registration Bottleneck

One idea that was put forward at the meal after the tournament is to
have two parallel registration streams. This should halve the
registration time, but it comes at a cost. Each desk requires two people
- one to identify the player and the fee, and the other to collect the
cash and deal with the change. So one would need to find 4 volunteers
for this method.

Another possibility is to remove the bottleneck entirely, by letting
players self-register. Assuming most players are pre-registered, the
idea is this:

A. On arrival, a player collects his or her ticket. The ticket contains
the usual details including the fee to be paid. The ticket is placed in
the 'registration box'. Late arrivals fill in their own ticket. So
there is no load on organisers having to identify players.

B. The draw for round 1 is done on the basis of the tickets collected.

C. Now, when players finish their games they go to the cashier to pay.

This means that registration can start virtually immediately the venue
doors are opened.

Secondly, collection of the entry fee is spread over a much longer and
less fraught period.

What can go wrong?
